Double Chin

What is a Double Chin?

A double chin will appear when excess fat has collected below your jawline that causes the skin to sag and wrinkle. The chances of developing a double chin will increase as you age, especially if you gain weight.

During the natural aging process, the muscles in your chin and neck weaken while your skin gradually loses its elasticity. This will likely result in the appearance of a double chin.

What causes a double chin?

The appearance of a double chin is frequently linked with weight gain and obesity. The other common cause of a double chin is genetics. In those cases, a person may be healthy and thin but still has a double chin. This would happen because some people are genetically predisposed to collect fat deposits in that area.

Here are some more reasons why you may have a double chin:

  • Aging
  • Weight gain
  • Obesity
  • Genetics
  • Poor nutrition
  • High fat intake
  • High salt intake
  • Dehydration
  • Water retention
  • Inactivity

How can you treat a double chin naturally?

First and foremost, you need to realistically evaluate your diet and exercise regime. Incorporating a nutrient-rich, low-calorie diet and about an hour of cardiovascular exercise into your daily routine will improve your overall health and appearance. Losing excess weight and toning your muscles is a great start to diminishing the appearance of a double chin.

In addition to working out your whole body with cardiovascular activities and weight lifting, you can also localize you exercise plan to specifically strengthen your neck muscles.

These exercises include:

  • With your mouth close, tilt your head back and hold that position for ten seconds. Do this three times a day.
  • Open your mouth, then bring your lower jaw forward and upward. Do this 10-15 times, three times a day.
  • Open your mouth, then position your bottom teeth under your bottom lip. Then, move your bottom jaw in an upward motion at least ten times. Do this three times a day.
  • Use the back of your hand to gently slap the bottom of your chin. First, starting out slow and then progressively increasing your speed. Do this for a few minutes, three times a day.

How can you treat a double chin at RejuvaYou?

When a double chin persists despite changes in your diet and exercise routine, you can look to aesthetic medicine to correct the problem area. For example, treatments like the Kybella, ReFirme and LipoLite are great examples of ways to safely and effectively tighten and firm your skin.

Kybella is the newest non-surgical option for reducing a double chin.  It involves a series of injections to dissolve the fat over time.  This is a great option for younger patients with good skin elasticity who desire improvement with less downtime.

The Sublime (ReFirme) is a noninvasive laser skin treatment that is considered to be the laser facelift. The Sublime utilizes bipolar radiofrequency and infrared technology that will improve the appearance of your double chin by lifting, firming and smoothing out your skin.

LipoLite is a minimally invasive procedure used for permanent fat removal. In this procedure, the fat is broken down as the skin tightens. A tiny, optical fiber inside a cannula is inserted into the skin to administer a laser beam that will heat and melt the fat cells. Once the fat has been liquefied, it is then suctioned out. This process results in not only dramatic fat reduction of the treated area, but also firmer, tighter and smoother skin. This procedure is ideal for eliminating a double chin and contouring your neck and jawline.

Different patients have different needs. When you set up your consultation at RejuvaYou, we can determine which treatment is going to give you optimum results.
