Platelet Rich Plasma for the Face

Commonly called the “vampire facial,” platelet-rich plasma for the face has received a lot of attention. It’s been called the elixir of youth because it can reduce wrinkles and deep creases, diminish acne scars, plump up sagging skin, and improve your complexion. But there’s also a lot of misinformation about this cosmetic treatment for facial skin rejuvenation. If you’ve heard about PRP facials and have tons of questions on your mind, keep reading to learn more about the procedure and how it can give you younger-looking skin.

What is PRP for the face?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a process in which we draw a small sample of blood, put it in a centrifuge machine to separate out the plasma and red blood cells, and re-inject the platelet-rich plasma into the face for skin rejuvenation.

Whole blood has around 200,000 platelets/µL on average. PRP has 4-6 times as many platelets – around 1,000,000 platelets/µL in a 5-mL sample. Therefore, platelet-rich plasma, as the name suggests, is rich in your own platelets. It has a very high concentration of various growth factors and proteins that are essential to heal damaged and aged skin.

What growth factors are in PRP?

Some of the key growth factors in PRP include platelet-derived growth factor (PGDF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF). These are all biological molecules that play a critical role in bone and soft tissue healing. Injection of PRP speeds up cell turnover and increases formation of new blood vessels in the target area, thereby stimulating collagen production and regenerating facial skin.

What is PRP treatment on the face like? Is PRP for the face painful?

PRP for face is a short office procedure – it usually takes 30-60 minutes to perform. There is minimal pain and discomfort with a PRP facial. To perform a PRP face, a member of our team will take a sample of your blood. At RejuvaYou Medical, we obtain a larger sample (50 mL) instead of the usual 10-20 mL so that we can have more highly concentrated PRP to use. We will then place your blood sample in a centrifuge machine to separate the plasma from the red cells. We will then numb your skin with a topical cream and inject the prepared PRP in carefully selected areas of the face.

How soon will I see results from a PRP facial?

There can be some minor swelling and bruising after PRP injections in the face. Once these symptoms resolve in a few days, you will be able to see the results of your PRP skin rejuvenation treatment. Patients have noticed a tightening of the skin, skin radiance, and an overall healthier complexion within 2-3 weeks. Over time, wrinkles, creases, and acne scars start to diminish as collagen production increases in the treated areas and your skin tone and texture improves.

How many PRP sessions are needed for the face?

Most patients initially get the treatment done a few times (3 treatments in a year) to get the best PRP face results. After you have had a package of PRP treatments, you may find that the results last longer, up to 18 months.

Does PRP for the face really work?

More than a dozen studies have evaluated the use of PRP for facial rejuvenation and found positive aesthetic outcomes. The treatment can be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as fat transfer, dermal fillers, and/or Botox for even better results. Benefits of PRP face include smoothing of wrinkles and scars, improved skin tone and texture, lifting and tightening of sagging facial tissues, and enhanced glow. What’s more, the risks of the procedure are minimal.

Top 3 Myths About PRP for the Face

Myth: A PRP is very painful.

Most patients do not find PRP face painful. There is some slight discomfort from the needle pricks, but it’s not significant. You might have some bruising, swelling, and pain afterwards, but this is short-lived and resolves on its own within a few days.

Myth: A PRP facial is very expensive.

A PRP face treatment costs around $1,400. Your total cost will depend on how many PRP facials you get, but a single facial is affordable, and you can see the results for yourself before committing to further treatments. With this treatment, PRP is collected, then injected into the face. An additional microneedling treatment with PRP is then performed for optimal results.

Myth: PRP face is risky.

PRP face is a minimally invasive procedure in which we use your own plasma. Therefore, there is no risk of an allergic reaction. When performed by a trained and experienced technician at our facility, the risk of other complications, such as infection, is also low.

Am I a good candidate for PRP face?

If you suffer from fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin tone, sagging skin, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging and sun damage, PRP facial rejuvenation can give you amazing results. It is a natural anti-aging treatment that harnesses your body’s own healing power to give you beautiful skin from within.

However, PRP face is an injection treatment that requires an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy to be performed safely. The PRP preparation method is also important to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment. If you are thinking about trying PRP for your face, it’s important to consult a provider who will examine your skin and determine whether platelet-rich plasma is right for you.
