What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The shape of your buttocks is largely determined by genetics and how your body stores fat. Yet, the buttocks are a key feature that contribute significantly to an attractive, well-proportioned body shape. If you have a flat backside despite a healthy lifestyle and would like to do something about it, there are cosmetic treatments that can transform your derriere into something curvier and shapelier. One of the most popular ways to accomplish this is with a procedure called the Brazilian butt lift or BBL. Please keep reading to learn more about this buttock enhancement surgery that can give you a fuller, rounder, more feminine/masculine butt contour. Also find out how BBL compares to other treatment options for buttock augmentation.

What is a Brazilian butt lift procedure?

A Brazilian butt lift is essentially a fat transfer procedure. It involves using your own fat to augment the size and shape of the buttocks. Excess fat is removed from donor areas such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs with liposuction. The fat is purified and processed and then re-injected into strategic locations in the buttocks. In this way you not only get an improved buttock contour but also get rid of fat from common problem areas. It is worth noting, however, that despite its name, BBL is not a traditional lifting procedure in that it does not reduce loose, sagging skin on the buttocks.

The skilled staff at RejuvaYou Medical can enhance the curves of your buttocks and give you natural-looking results with a Brazilian butt lift. Your clothes will fit better and you will have a more aesthetically pleasing, youthful butt shape, as well as improved balance between your upper and lower body.

Is Brazilian butt lift permanent? How long does it last?

The results of a Brazilian butt lift last for many years. Some of the fat cells that are transplanted into the buttocks do not “take.” However, the fat cells that do survive the transfer remain in place for years. The final results of a BBL are visible after about 6 months. Significant fluctuations in body weight can affect the results of your Brazilian butt lift, so it’s important to maintain a stable, healthy weight to keep looking your best.

Fat survival after Brazilian butt lift depends on a few different factors, mainly the technique used to obtain the fat. At RejuvaYou Medical, we use a specialized fat transfer technique called VASER to harvest the fat for a Brazilian butt lift. This is a gentler, more controlled type of liposuction that uses ultrasound to disrupt the bonds between fat cells during collection. It ensures that the fat is removed more effectively and more of it survives after transplantation into the buttocks. Studies have shown that 85% of fat cells remain viable when VASER is used for autologous fat transfer.

How is Brazilian butt lift performed? What is recovery like?

A Brazilian butt lift is a surgical procedure. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The first step involves removing fat from the hips, thighs, or abdomen using VASER liposuction. The extracted fat is then purified, prepared, and re-injected into specific, strategically mapped out points on the buttocks to improve the shape and add volume.

Pain after a Brazilian butt lift surgery is usually minimal and can be controlled with pain medicine. You will need to avoid sitting or lying on your butt for 2 weeks after the procedure (you’ll need to sleep on your side or tummy) and stand for all activities except using the toilet. After a couple of weeks, your doctor will permit you to sit on a donut pillow that takes pressure off the buttocks. You can resume normal sitting about 8 weeks after your BBL. While light activities can be restarted roughly 1 week after surgery, you will need to take 10-14 days off work to recover from your Brazilian butt lift.

What are the other treatment options for butt augmentation?

There are two other ways to improve the shape and augment the size of the buttocks.

Buttock augmentation with implants

This is a surgical procedure in which silicone implants are used to add volume to the butt. The advantages of butt implants are that they deliver the most dramatic and impressive results. Also, the results are visible immediately and are permanent. The implants are virtually undetectable.

The disadvantages are that implants do not give the most natural results. Also, butt implant placement is a major surgery that requires 2-3 weeks of recovery. The incisions made to place the implants are fairly large and can lead to scarring, which may be visible after healing. Also, because foreign objects, i.e. silicone implants, are placed in the body, there are attendant risks and complications such as implant migration or implant rupture.

Sculptra butt lift

This is a non-surgical, minimally-invasive procedure in which a dermal filler called Sculptra is used to augment the butt. The filler not only adds volume to the buttocks but also stimulates collagen production, leading to a fuller, rounder shape with improved skin texture and potential reduction in cellulite. The advantages of a Sculptra butt lift are that you get subtle, natural-looking results. It is a low-risk office procedure with no downtime and minimal disruption to your routine.

The disadvantage is that the filler is gradually absorbed by the body. Therefore, the results of a Sculptra butt lift do not last as long as a Brazilian butt lift or butt implants.

Which procedure is right for me – Brazilian Butt Lift vs Sculptra Butt Lift vs butt implants?

Each method of buttock augmentation has its pros and cons. In general, the Brazilian butt lift is considered the “go-to” procedure to enhance the shape and size of the buttocks. However, BBL may not be right for everyone. For example, people who do not have enough excess fat in the donor areas for fat transfer may be better suited to a Sculptra butt lift or butt implants.
