Pico Short Pulse Laser

The beauty trend of “glass skin” (radiant, flawless skin without any imperfections like acne scars, pores, or uneven tone) originated in Korea, but has since taken the whole world by storm. This has led to an increased interest in devices like the PicoLazer which can help to dramatically improve the appearance of your skin.

Please continue reading to learn more about this groundbreaking non-invasive laser skin treatment. Find out how it works and why leading dermatologists and beauty experts are so excited about PicoLazer.

What is PicoLazer skin treatment?

PicoLazer is a 450-picosecond dual-wavelength laser (meaning, it delivers ultra-short bursts of laser energy in two different wavelengths). A picosecond is one-trillionth of a second, so this is a high energy laser that can treat a variety of skin concerns related to sun damage, aging, and pigmentation (discoloration). It can also effectively remove unwanted tattoos.

Besides the face, PicoLazer can be used on other parts of the body as well. PicoLazer is suitable for all skin types. What’s more, it’s a gentle laser, so the treatments are fast and efficient and there is minimal downtime.

How does the PicoLazer work?

PicoLazer delivers a powerful beam of laser light to your skin. It is a non-thermal laser, meaning it does not use heat to injure the skin. Rather, it uses a photomechanical effect without causing thermal damage.

The laser energy triggers the body’s natural repair mechanisms, causing your skin to make more collagen and elastin. These are the skin proteins that keep your skin looking smooth, soft, radiant, and youthful. As you grow older, your skin makes significantly less collagen. By triggering new collagen formation, PicoLazer treatment can revitalize your skin. Yet, the surface of your skin is not injured during the treatment, and as a result, your recovery is quick.

PicoLazer treats pigmented lesions and removes unwanted tattoos by shattering the pigment-containing cells in the skin. Once these cells have been broken apart, they are removed by the body’s natural skin turnover cycle.

What skin problems can PicoLazer treat?

PicoLazer can be used to treat skin concerns such as:

  • Melasma
  • Sun damage – age spots, sun spots, dark spots, hyperpigmentation
  • Pigmented lesions
  • Acne scars and other scars
  • Freckles
  • Stretch marks
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Unwanted tattoos

Am I a good candidate for PicoLazer treatments?

PicoLazer is one of the gentlest lasers out there, and it is suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones. If you have skin concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, pigmentation, freckles, melasma, stretch marks, or acne scars on the face or body, you are likely a good candidate for this short pulse laser treatment. However, at RejuvaYou Medical, we evaluate each client individually to ensure they can benefit from PicoLazer treatments. Please see us in consultation to discuss your specific concerns.

How do I prepare for a PicoLazer appointment?

There is no specific preparation required other than staying well hydrated and avoiding sun exposure as much as possible in the weeks leading up to your appointment.

What to expect during PicoLazer treatment? Does it hurt?

We will give you a pair of goggles to protect your eyes. Then we’ll clean your skin and apply a topical numbing cream, if needed (most people don’t need it). The treatment itself is pretty straightforward. We apply the laser device to your skin in the treatment area. You might experience some mild discomfort, like a rubber band lightly snapping against your skin.

The treatment takes around 15-30 minutes to complete. You can go home immediately afterwards with a healing serum on your skin.

How long is the recovery period after PicoLazer treatment?

You are free to resume all normal activities like desk work, running errands, and light exercise immediately after your PicoLazer treatment. Some people like to take 1-2 days off work to allow their skin to heal and for any lingering redness to fade. We only ask that you avoid retinoid-containing skincare products for 5 days and avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible (please wear SPF30 or higher sunblock).

When will I see results from PicoLazer?

You will see some improvement in your skin 2-3 weeks after your first treatment. The full results of the treatments will develop gradually as your skin makes more collagen and/or removes the shattered pigmented cells. You will continue to see improvement until your last treatment and beyond.

Are PicoLazer results permanent?

When PicoLazer is used for tattoo removal or scar treatment, the results are considered permanent. When a picosecond laser is used for skin revitalization, the results are long-lasting but not permanent because you continue to age over time. Maintenance treatments can help to maintain youthful looking skin.

How many PicoLazer treatments will I need?

In general, most people need 3-4 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart. However, the exact number of PicoLazer sessions depends on the skin concern you are treating and the severity of your skin condition. Fine lines and wrinkles usually require 2-3 treatments, pigmentation requires 3-4 treatments, and scarring and tattoo removal requires 4-6 treatment sessions. The sessions may be spaced further apart (4-8 weeks apart) if you have darker skin or sensitive skin.

What are the side effects of PicoLazer?

There can be some mild redness or swelling after a PicoLazer treatment, but this usually disappears on its own within 24 hours. You should know that acne scars can sometimes appear darker after the treatment before ultimately fading.
